Rainy season is here, along with pleasant rain here comes uninvited cold, flu, infections, allergies and many other monsoon diseases. People of all age groups get affected in this season especially children and elders are more prone and need extra care. Our immune system mainly gets affected in this season due to the cold and humid weather conditions.
Monsoon is the peak season and breeding time for different insects, bacteria, virus, and others. This increases our risk of several water-borne diseases (diarrhea, cholera, Malaria and others), Mosquito-borne diseases (Chikungunya, Dengue, Zika fever and others), Food-borne diseases (Gastroenteritis, stomach infections, and others) and Air-borne diseases (Flu, chickenpox, and others). Here are few general safety precautions during the rainy season which help to safeguard us in many ways. Though these rainy season safety tips look simple but have effective results and will protect you and your family from several monsoon-related diseases.
- Carry your rain gear- The first and foremost thing to do in a rainy season is carrying rain gear like an umbrella, hooded raincoats, and waterproof boots. These protect us from unexpected downpour and drenching.
- A warm shower after getting drenched- Unfortunately, if you get drenched in rain, the first thing to do is take a warm water shower and clean your body and hair. This helps to eliminate the risk of several infections like skin infections and scalp infections.
- Drink enough boiled water- Water-borne diseases are very common in this season and to avoid the risk one should always drink lots of boiled or purified water. Carry your own water bottle with you to eliminate the risks. Drink lots of water even if you are not thirsty, as this helps in flushing away toxins from your body.
- Follow a healthy diet- Intake of healthy and nutritious diet is very important to everyone irrespective of seasons. Always consume hot and fresh foods, soups and a glass of warm milk with little turmeric is always useful. It improves immunity and lowers your risk of cold, flu and other infections. Avoid unhealthy junk foods, roadside foods and uncooked salads to reduce the risk of stomach infections. It is highly suggestible to avoid leafy vegetables during monsoon as they may carry germs. You can even use easily available herbs like ginger and garlic, they improve immunity and lower your risk of infections, cold and flu.
Do not eat uncovered foods, fruits that are cut hours before, just have fresh food and thoroughly washed fruits.
- Keep your surroundings clean- Not just staying hygiene is important but keeping your surroundings clean is also very important during monsoon. Avoid water stagnation to eliminate the risk of mosquito breeding.
- Use mosquito nets, wear full sleeve clothes- Use mosquito nets to avoid mosquito bites. Cover your body fully and do not step out without applying mosquito repellent creams as we all especially children are more prone to mosquito-borne disease.
- Avoid playing in dirty rainwater- Though most of the kids love to play in mud water, it is not safe and increases your risk of bacterial and fungal infections. Always ask your kids to wash themselves or take a warm bath after reaching home.
- Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth- Most of the kids keep their dirty unwashed hands near their eyes, nose, and mouth. This is highly not recommended as it leads to several infections like eye infections (conjunctivitis), cold, flu, stomach infections and others. Most importantly ask them to wash their hands frequently to avoid infections.
- Be careful with electrical appliances- Risk of electrical accidents is high in a rainy season, be very careful with it and also teach kids not to play with faulty, frayed, exposed or cracked electrical wires. It is advised to switch off the power points while plugging or unplugging appliances.
Stay away from infected persons as infections are highly contagious and easily spread from one person to other. Do not send your kid to school until he/she is completely cured to avoid worsening of health condition and also spreading of diseases.
